Harrogate Theatre has stood on Oxford Street since 1900, and the auditorium — compact, horseshoe-shaped and steeply raked — is a large part of the appeal. There is no bad distance from the stage.

The programme mixes touring drama, comedy, music and studio work with its own productions, and the Christmas pantomime is a genuine local institution.

It is central enough to build an evening around, with restaurants a few minutes' walk in most directions. Check the theatre's own listings for what's on and book early for the Christmas run.
