Things to Do in Harrogate

Harrogate is an easy place to explore.

You can walk from gardens and historic buildings to independent shops, cafés and restaurants in minutes, while some of Yorkshire's best countryside and attractions are close enough for an easy day out.

There's plenty to fill a weekend without leaving the town, but Harrogate also makes a great base for exploring places like Knaresborough, Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey and the surrounding countryside.

If it's your first visit, these are the places we'd start with.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr

Crag Lane

On the western edge of Harrogate, RHS Garden Harlow Carr is one of the town's standout attractions and worth allowing a few hours for.

The garden changes considerably with the seasons, combining colourful borders and woodland with streams, meadows, kitchen gardens and plenty of quieter corners to explore.

It's particularly good if you want to escape the centre without actually travelling very far, and there's enough here to make it either part of your day or the main event.

There's also a Bettys Café Tea Rooms at Harlow Carr, so you can combine two Harrogate institutions in one visit.

If Harlow Carr is already in your plans, this is an opportunity to visit Bettys without necessarily joining the queue at the Parliament Street tearoom.

Walk through Valley Gardens

Valley Drive

You don't need to leave Harrogate to find plenty of green space.

Valley Gardens sits just beyond the Montpellier Quarter and is one of those places that's equally good for a proper wander or simply taking half an hour away from the town centre.

The Grade II listed gardens cover 17 acres and include formal gardens, woodland, historic buildings and play areas.

Its location also makes it particularly easy to combine with Montpellier, the Royal Pump Room Museum and the western side of town.

Experience the Turkish Baths

Parliament Street

Harrogate grew as a spa town, and the Turkish Baths are one of the best places to actually experience that heritage rather than simply read about it.

The historic interior is part of the attraction. Its Moorish design, Islamic arches, terrazzo floors and elaborately decorated rooms make this feel quite different from a modern hotel spa.

The experience takes you through a series of heated rooms before cooling down, continuing a tradition that has been part of Harrogate for generations.

For adults visiting Harrogate without children, this is one of the experiences that makes the town genuinely distinctive.

Explore Montpellier

Montpellier Quarter

If you only have a few hours in Harrogate, make sure some of them are spent around Montpellier.

This is one of the town's most attractive areas, with Victorian architecture, independent shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants and pubs clustered around streets that are made for wandering rather than rushing through.

It's also where you'll find some of Harrogate's classic architecture and several of its best-known independent businesses.

Montpellier puts you within easy reach of Valley Gardens, the Royal Pump Room Museum and Parliament Street, so it fits naturally into a walk around the town.

There's no complicated itinerary required here. Have a wander and see what you find.

Discover Harrogate's spa history

Royal Pump Room Museum

Harrogate exists in its present form largely because of its spa heritage.

The Royal Pump Room was built over the town's Old Sulphur Well and tells the story of the people who travelled to Harrogate to "take the waters".

At the height of Harrogate's popularity as a spa destination, wealthy visitors came from across Britain and beyond for the supposed health benefits of its mineral springs.

It's a relatively compact attraction, which makes it easy to combine with Valley Gardens and Montpellier rather than needing to dedicate an entire day to it.

Visit the Mercer Art Gallery

Swan Road

Close to the Pump Room and Valley Gardens, the Mercer Art Gallery gives you another reason to explore this side of town.

Its collection and changing exhibitions cover fine art from the 19th century through to contemporary work.

It's particularly useful to know about when the Yorkshire weather isn't cooperating, but it's worth visiting in its own right if art and culture are part of your weekend.

See what's on at Harrogate Theatre

Oxford Street

Harrogate Theatre has been part of the town since 1900 and remains one of the key venues in Harrogate's cultural scene.

The programme changes throughout the year and spans theatre, comedy, music, family entertainment and touring productions.

Rather than treating it purely as an attraction, think of the theatre as part of an evening in town: dinner beforehand, a performance and somewhere for a drink afterwards.

It's right in the centre, so you've got plenty of options within a few minutes' walk.

Walk The Stray

You can't really understand Harrogate without noticing The Stray.

The huge stretches of open grass wrap around much of the centre and are a defining part of the town. They're used for walking, running, picnics and simply getting from one part of Harrogate to another away from the roads.

Spring is an especially good time to see it.

The crocuses are one of Harrogate's most recognisable seasonal sights, followed by the blossom trees that turn parts of The Stray pink and white later in spring.

There's nothing complicated about visiting The Stray. It's simply part of Harrogate, and one of the things that gives the town so much space despite being right on the edge of the centre.

Make time for Bettys

Parliament Street

It's famous for a reason.

Bettys has been part of Harrogate since 1919 and its Parliament Street tearoom remains one of the places most strongly associated with the town.

If it's your first visit, afternoon tea is the classic experience, but you don't necessarily need to make a big occasion of it. Coffee, cake, breakfast or lunch are all good excuses to go inside.

And there are actually two Bettys in Harrogate.

The second is at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, so if Harlow Carr is already part of your plans, you can combine the gardens with a Bettys visit there instead.

Explore Cold Bath Road

Cold Bath Road shows a slightly different side of Harrogate.

The road and surrounding streets have developed their own collection of independent cafés, restaurants, shops and places to drink.

It's less about ticking off a particular attraction and more about exploring a part of town that locals actually use.

Walk up from the centre, stop for coffee or lunch, browse the independents and perhaps stay for a drink.

Go beyond Harrogate

One of the biggest advantages of using Harrogate as a base is what sits around it.

Within a relatively short drive you can be walking around reservoirs, exploring dramatic rock formations, standing inside the ruins of a medieval abbey or wandering beside the River Nidd.

If you're staying for more than a day, we'd strongly recommend exploring beyond the town itself.

Spend a few hours in Knaresborough

Around 4 miles from Harrogate

Knaresborough is close enough that there's little reason not to explore it while you're here.

The view from around the castle across the River Nidd and railway viaduct is one of the most recognisable in the area, while the waterside, old streets and cafés make it an easy half-day trip.

In warmer weather, hiring a rowing boat on the river is part of the appeal.

You can also reach Knaresborough easily by train from Harrogate, which means you don't necessarily need the car.

Explore Brimham Rocks

Near Summerbridge

Brimham Rocks is one of the most unusual landscapes near Harrogate.

The enormous natural rock formations are scattered across open moorland, creating a landscape that feels almost deliberately constructed despite being the result of hundreds of millions of years of geology and erosion.

Some of the best-known formations are relatively close to the main arrival area, but it's worth giving yourself time to explore further.

It's particularly good with children because there's a sense of freedom and adventure that's very different from a conventional visitor attraction.

Visit Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal

Near Ripon

This is one we'd happily make the journey for.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal combines the dramatic ruins of a Cistercian monastery with an 18th-century water garden and deer park within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The scale is part of what makes it special. This isn't somewhere we'd try to squeeze into an hour between other attractions.

Walk through the abbey ruins before continuing into Studley Royal, where canals, lakes, cascades, follies and parkland completely change the character of the landscape.

If you've got the time, make this a proper day out.

Walk around Swinsty Reservoir

Washburn Valley

For an easy escape into the countryside, Swinsty Reservoir is one of the best options close to Harrogate.

Set in the Washburn Valley, it's surrounded by woodland and open countryside, with an established circular route around the water.

It's a great option when you want a proper countryside walk without committing to a full day in the Yorkshire Dales.

There's something particularly appealing about Swinsty's simplicity: park up, walk around the water, enjoy the views and head back towards Harrogate afterwards.

Explore Fewston Reservoir

Washburn Valley

Swinsty's neighbouring reservoir, Fewston, gives you another excellent walking option.

The landscape is a mixture of water, woodland and open countryside and feels surprisingly rural considering how easily you can reach it from Harrogate.

Fewston and Swinsty sit alongside each other, which also gives you the option of making the walk longer and exploring both rather than choosing between them.

Choose one for a relatively easy outing, or combine the reservoirs when you want to spend longer outside.

If you only have one day in Harrogate

Don't try to do everything.

Start the morning around Montpellier, explore the Royal Pump Room and walk through Valley Gardens.

From there, choose between spending part of the afternoon at RHS Garden Harlow Carr or experiencing the Turkish Baths.

Leave yourself some time simply to walk around the town, whether that's The Stray, Cold Bath Road or the centre itself.

Then make the evening about food.

Harrogate's compact size means you don't need to spend the day racing between attractions. That's part of the appeal.

If you have a whole weekend

That's when we'd start looking beyond the centre.

Spend one day properly exploring Harrogate itself.

On the second, choose what suits you.

For a major heritage day out, go to Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal.

For something outdoors and a little more adventurous, try Brimham Rocks.

For an easy half day, head to Knaresborough.

And if what you really want is a good walk away from the crowds, Swinsty and Fewston Reservoirs are hard to beat.

You'll see considerably more of what makes this part of North Yorkshire special without spending half the weekend in the car.
