The Harrogate institution on Parliament Street: fat rascals, tiered afternoon tea and a queue that rarely disappears.

Bettys opened in Harrogate in 1919 and has stayed almost defiantly itself ever since: waiting staff in white aprons, a long counter of cakes and breads at the front, and a tea room behind it that has changed very little in living memory.

It is the town's best-known address and, inevitably, the busiest. Expect to queue at weekends and through the summer. Go early on a weekday morning if you want the experience without the wait.

The draw is the ritual rather than novelty — a pot of properly made tea, a fat rascal warm from the bakery, or the full tiered afternoon tea if you have booked and have a couple of hours to spare. The shop at the front is the quicker option if you only want something to take away.
