The Mercer Art Gallery holds Harrogate's fine art collection and runs a rotating exhibition programme in a handsome 19th-century building near Valley Gardens.

Shows change several times a year and range from historic works drawn from the collection to contemporary and regional artists, so it rewards repeat visits more than a single one.

Admission has traditionally been free and the gallery is small enough to see properly in under an hour — easy to combine with the Royal Pump Room Museum and the gardens in one walk. Check current exhibitions and opening days before travelling.
